Recently I sat down with Nicholie, one of my clients, a professional Hairstylist and Makeup Artist who owns a company called Beautestry covering photography, runway, TV, music, bridal and courses. Our aim was to find a way to combine her top tips for keeping her clients and her own skin looking amazing as well as my own nutritional philosophy to create an all round cheat sheet for those who want to get into shape and look great this New Year. Here’s what we came up with…
#1 Drink More Water
Drink at least two liters of water a day so that we can start the detoxification process. This way you will have clear skin, clear focus, being hydrated has been scientifically proven to enhance concentration levels and it will keep you fuller creating a faster and healthier metabolism. You can add flavor to your water by adding sliced lemon, which also aids digestion.
#2 Cleanse Your Face & Remove Your Make-Up
The golden rule of beauty basics is to spare the time to remove all traces from the days worth of dirt and dust, every single night before bedtime. Makeup and free radicals left overnight cause dead skin cells to build up and doesn’t just clog pores; it can cause excessive dryness and even skin dandruff. Cleansing your face twice on a daily basis, morning and evening, is crucial for a clear complexion. A simple cleansing lotion, gel or soap free face wash should do the trick. Washing your face more than this can result in dryness. The natural oils produced by the skin are required to nourish it. Be kind and be clean!
#3 Moisturise Away Dull Dry Skin
Hydrating the body from inside and outside is important. After cleansing, follow up by moisturising your skin. Most creams and lotions have key ingredients that create a protective barrier on the surface of the skin to lock in moisture, and to protect the skin against external influences such as air pollutions, smoke, UV radiation and makeup. Slather on a moisturiser while your face is still damp to plump and improve the appearance of fine lines as skin drinks up the moisture. The moisture will lock in better on damp skin than it would if it was completely dry. It’s important how you apply creams and serums to your face. The skin being your biggest organ, needs massaging to keep firm and toned, so apply product in sweeping movements up the jawline for the perfect application.
#4 Keep Hunger Pangs At Bay With Protein.
Most people are not eating enough protein for lean muscle growth, firm skin, recovery and metabolism. Men should be aiming for a minimum of 1000g of net weight protein and women should be aiming for a minimum of 650g of net weight protein.
Morning
Oily fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel are some of the best sources of protein and is fantastic for your hormones, your energy, your brains (mental function) your ability to burn fat and beautiful skin due to high amounts of omega 3 found in this fish. Oily fish is best consumed in the morning as it is digested throughout the day and will give you a consistent supply of energy.
Afternoon
Try to eating steak, chicken or beef in the afternoon. Chicken is a cheap, easy and readily available protein whilst steak and beef is found to be high in creatine which gives us explosive energy for your workouts.
Evening
In the evening eat turkey or cod. Turkey is high in tryptophan which releases serotonin calming the body down and making you feel happy, tryptophan is also great for improving your quality of sleep which helps with giving you that essential and required “beauty sleep,” the most important thing you could possibly do for your health.
#5 Eat More Colourful Vegetables
Eating lots of colourful vegetables can help to balance your ph levels and detoxify your skin. It will also help you to get a lean and trim stomach and look and feel amazing. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Carrots are high in vitamin A and fantastic for your skin, eat them raw or steamed and don’t over cook them as you’ll lose their nutritional value.
- One grilled tomato with your breakfast is high in the antioxidant vitamin E and can make your skin glow.
- Eat an orange after your workout for an additional antioxidant boost to your immune system and increased testosterone, the naturally occurring hormone that is a human youth serum.
- Bell peppers in the evening are very helpful for fat burning as they reduce ‘bad’ cholesterol and have anti-inflammatory properties.
- Eat anti-oestrogenic vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus and kale to draw away softness, puffiness, bloating water and retention.
I hope you find these tips useful and move closer towards better health and feeling great on the inside and out. If you enjoyed these please feel to share them with others and if you’d like to find out more about Nicholie, you can follow her on Istagram while her new website is being constructed.
